Social Networking

In this session, we will create a Facebook account and explore some of its feature as a way to find out why social networking tools are so popular among our users, particularly among our younger patrons and students.

Schedule for Week 6

OVERVIEW by Tuesday - Learn about social networking sites and how they can be used by libraries.

EXERCISE by Tuesday - Create a Facebook account, add friends to your account, add two or three applications, and become a Fan of the SEMLS Learning 2.0 page.

READING by Wednesday - Read the following blog posting.
"Libraries in Social Networking Software," Meredith Farkas
I have also bookmarked several resources on social networking on Delicious if you would like to do further reading.

SEE what other libraries are doing by Wednesday - Take a look at these examples of libraries on Facebook to see how others are using this platform.

DISCUSSION by Wednesday  - We're going to do something a little different for this week's discussion. Please post your discussion to the Discussion Board of the SEMLS Learning 2.0 Page in Facebook. I will post the initial topic to which you can reply. Consider the following questions as you post.
  • Should public libraries use social networking sites, like Facebook and MySpace, to reach out to users? What about school libraries? Academic libraries? Specials?
  • Do you think your library will consider participating in a social networking site in the near future?
  • Do you think your users would be interested in becoming a fan of your library on Facebook?
  • If your library were to build a page on Facebook, what type of information would you need to include to make it a useful destination for your patrons and students? How often would you need to update it?
DISCUSSION by Friday - Post a comment to the discussion board of the SEMLS Learning 2.0 Page responding to at least one other comment.
