SEMLS Wiki Sandbox

Play in the SEMLS Wiki Sandbox

Since you are already fairly familiar with the Zoho wiki software, I'm going to use a different service for this week's exercise. I set up a Wiki Sandbox using WetPaint. This wiki software is easy to use, but you will notice that there are adds along the side. Schools can take advantage of an ad-free education wiki through WetPaint. PBWiki is also a nice ad-free option for libraries, as well as WikiSpaces, voted by allthewikis.com as the best wiki for classroom use.

This is your play area, and I encourage you to try adding all different kinds of stuff to the wiki to see what it can do.

Exercise:

  1. The wiki is available at http://semls20.wetpaint.com. This wiki has been used in previous Learning 2.0 classes, and you will see content added by participants from those classes.
  2. In this wiki, we are going to share our favorites with each other. Start by clicking on the Favorite Blogs link and add a link to your blog there. This will just let us know that you made it to the wiki. To add the link:
    • Click on the Easy Edit button on the Favorite Blogs page.
    • Make sure your cursor is at the bottom of the list and type YourName's blog (e.g. I would type Kathy's blog.)
    • Highlight YourName's blog and click the Link button at the right of the EasyEdit Toolbar.
    • Type the address of your WordPress blog (be sure to include the http://) and click the Add Link button.
    • Click Save on the EasyEdit toolbar.
    • WetPaint will ask you to add an edit note so that other collaborators can know why you are making the edit. At this time, you can just click Skip Edit Note.
  3. Go back to the main page by clicking on the Home link in the left column.
  4. Click on some of the categories already listed on the main page, edit the page, and add your personal favorites to the list. You don't have to add favorites for every category; just the ones you feel comfortable with sharing. Feel free to use the Photo button or the Widget button to add images or other fun content to the wiki page.
  5. Now it's time to come up with your own category. Go back to the main page where the categories are listed. Click the Easy Edit button and add a category. You will then need to create a link to the new category page:
    • Highlight the name of the category.
    • Click the Link button at the right of the EasyEdit Toolbar
    • In the Link to box, type the name of your new page. You can choose whatever name you like. This name will also be listed as the main heading for the new page.
    • Click the Add Link button.
    • Save the page.
    • Click on the link for the new category you just created.
    • Wetpaint will inform you that the page does not exist and will ask you if you would like to create a new page. Click the create link.
    • WetPaint will automatically give the page the name you already provided. You can add some tags to the page and click the Add Page button.
    • Click the Easy Edit button to add favorites for your new category. Save the page.
  6. Take a look at some of the information included in the blue box at the bottom of the page. This is where you can view the page tags and access a history of the page. Users can also easily add this wiki page to their Delicious or Facebook accounts.

Exploring Further

Optional Exercise:

Once you are done playing around with the Wiki Sandbox, you're ready to join the greater wiki community. For this optional exercise, consider contributing to an existing wiki. We are all an expert in something, and this is your opportunity to share your expertise with the greater community. You may already know of a wiki where you can contribute, or you can try one of the following:

  • Find an article in Wikipedia for a topic on which you are knowledgeable. Every town in Massachusetts has a Wikipedia entry that you might be able to add to, or maybe there is another interest area you can contribute to. Add something to this page.
  • If your library has a digital collection, follow the University of Washington Libraries' example and add links to your digital collections to relevant topics in Wikipedia.
  • Share a success story from your library on the LibSuccess wiki.
  • Post a comment to this page telling us where you contributed. Did you like contributing? Do you think you'll do it again?
