Explore Tagging in Delicious

Delicious is a social bookmarking manager which allows you to bookmark a Web page and add tags to categorize your bookmarks.

Many users find that the real power of delicious lies in the social network aspect, which allows you to see how other users have tagged similar links and also discover other Web sites that may be of interest to you. You can think of it as peering into another users’ filing cabinet, but with this powerful bookmarking tool each user's filing cabinet helps to build an expansive knowledge network.

For this exercise, you are asked to take a look at delicious, learn about this popular bookmarking tool, and use it to find and share information about using Web 2.0 in libraries.

Exercise:

  1. Create a delicious account at https://secure.delicious.com/register. This site does require e-mail verification, so be sure to use an e-mail address that is less likely to filter it out as Spam.

  2. Read Getting Started for a brief overview on how to use the basic features of delicious.
  3. Take a look around delicious starting with my account at http://delicious.com/kmlussier. Take a look at the links listed under the semls20 tag. These links were specifically selected to supplement the activities in this class.

  4. Find other del.icio.us users bookmarking sites about Web 2.0 in libraries (Hint: following my "library2.0" tag and then clicking "popular" at the top of the screen should bring up a lot of sites.)
  5. On the Search Results page, pick a link that has been bookmarked by a lot of people. Click on the blue box that shows the number of people who bookmarked it. Can you see the notes they added about this bookmark or the tags that they used to categorize this reference?

  6. From the sites you find while exploring, select at least one to add to your delicious account. When adding tags for the site, be sure to add the semls20 tag so that it will be available for your classmate's to see at http://delicious.com/tag/semls20.
