Learn More About Tagging

Tagging is an open and informal method of categorizing that allows users to associate keywords with online content (webpages, pictures & posts). Unlike library subject cataloging, which follows a strict set of guidelines (i.e.Library of Congress subject headings), tagging is completely unstructured and freeform, allowing users to create connections between data anyway they want.

The following video will provide an overview of tagging and show how it is used in the three sites we will be exploring this week.

Kathy,

I found the video hard to watch - a bit blurred. When I enlarged the screen, it was much worse.

Sorry about the blurriness. The original wasn't too bad, but the quality degraded when I uploaded it to YouTube.

I uploaded the original to our Web site this afternoon, which is available for download. However, it is 19 MB and will take some time to download.

You can find it at <a href="http://www.semls.org/what/ce/tagging.wmv">http://www.semls.org/what/ce/tagging.wmv</a>.

Unfortunately, I use Windows software to create videos, so it requires Windows Media Player. I know some of you are using Macs, so I'll look around to see if I can find a better video sharing site for next week.

Aaargh! Apparently I can't post links in the comments field. You'll need to copy and paste the URL - http://www.semls.org/what/ce/tagging.wmv.
