Learning 2.0 @ SEMLS

Class News for 3/6/2008

Congratulations to everyone for finishing the Learning 2.0 program. This has been a great group, and I'm going to miss talking to all of you about your progress with Web 2.0 sites. Of course, I know this isn't goodbye because I will be seeing a lot of you at SEMLS workshops. Also, you are always free to contact me at any time if you have questions while continuing your explorations.

I have posted the transcripts from this week's chats in the Course Links section of the wiki. I have also posted some Next Steps
for you to continue your learning. I will be adding some comments to the podcasting and video discussion later today.

You have all done a better job at keeping up with your blogs than I have, but, if I had kept up with mine, I would probably be creating a post right now saying that this is the most excited I've been about teaching a class in a long time. It's not to say that I don't enjoy teaching other classes at SEMLS, but it's been great to explore how all of these technologies work together, which is something I can't do in a three-hour workshop. You all started off with different levels of knowledge at the beginning of the class, and I've seen each and every one of you grow in one way or another.

For those of you who have stuck to the end, I will soon be sending you a Learning 2.0 certificate via delivery/mail as well as an Amazon gift card via e-mail.

Thank you for making this such a rewarding online experience!

Great to see you all here. One of the frustrating things I find with social networking stuff is the sign-on process. It seems like something that should go so easily, but, with social networking services protecting themselves from automated processes that sign up with phony e-mail addresses, and our own e-mail servers protecting us from Spam, it never goes smoothly.

I found setting up the blog to be relatively streamlined, but I may have missed a step by working intuitively...I'll try to fine tune it if this is the case. I know that the teens in my library would have no problem with the process. We all recognize how tech-savvy they are. Adult patrons may not be so willing. For the staff, finding the time behind the scenes in a busy library is always tricky. Classroom teachers could utilize blogs for their kids to interface with the library for classroom assignments, homework help, etc. I believe libraries must keep up to speed on all these developments, even it is perceived as jumping on the technology bandwagon. I am doing my darndest to keep all the passwords and identities straight. Many rivers to cross....anyway, having read and highlighted my way through the readings I'd say they gave a good overview of what we are about to explore. It is all too much for me, but the knack is to do what you can and get a grip. For me, I am looking forward to doing with teens' help an online book blog. I do not think it will rock everyone's world, but it is what I think could be useful. I am also very happy to hopefully share my misadventures with my co-workers and learn/pass on 'stuff' to them. We are fortunate at our library we have 2 active MLS students - URI & Simmons - who are topnotch and are always sharing 'stuff.' My biggest disparaging remark is 'if you are sitting at a desk or bistro constantly blogging, logging or virtual snogging are you REALLY making contact?' For my part, all in moderation, and I hope I use it wisely, efficiently and happily when needed. Thank you, this is a great opportunity. KJ

How do I post comments on blogs? It seems I have been unsuccessful with 2 times i've tried. Am I confused or just bewildered? KJ

KJ - I have posted a response to you question about blog comments on the Help Page. There is a link to the page under the "Course Links" in the right column.

Cheers!

Not related to course, but just asking....has anyone written & submitted an Equal Access grant to MBLC? I would like to know. I am working on one for Youth EA. Thanks. KJfromSPL
