Explore Tagging in Delicious

Delicious is a social bookmarking manager which allows you to bookmark a Web page and add tags to categorize your bookmarks.

Many users find that the real power of delicious lies in the social network aspect, which allows you to see how other users have tagged similar links and also discover other Web sites that may be of interest to you. You can think of it as peering into another users’ filing cabinet, but with this powerful bookmarking tool each user's filing cabinet helps to build an expansive knowledge network.

For this exercise, you are asked to take a look at delicious, learn about this popular bookmarking tool, and use it to find and share information about using Web 2.0 in libraries.

Exercise:

  1. Create a delicious account at https://secure.delicious.com/register. This site does require e-mail verification, so be sure to use an e-mail address that is less likely to filter it out as Spam.

  2. Read Getting Started for a brief overview on how to use the basic features of delicious.
  3. Take a look around delicious starting with my account at http://delicious.com/kmlussier. Take a look at the links listed under the semls20 tag. These links were specifically selected to supplement the activities in this class.

  4. Find other del.icio.us users bookmarking sites about Web 2.0 in libraries (Hint: following my "library2.0" tag and then clicking "popular" at the top of the screen should bring up a lot of sites.)
  5. On the Search Results page, pick a link that has been bookmarked by a lot of people. Click on the blue box that shows the number of people who bookmarked it. Can you see the notes they added about this bookmark or the tags that they used to categorize this reference?

  6. From the sites you find while exploring, select at least one to add to your delicious account. When adding tags for the site, be sure to add the semls20 tag so that it will be available for your classmate's to see at http://delicious.com/tag/semls20.

I find this fascinating! I like being able to access all my bookmarks from any computer.

I set up a delicious account a long time ago, but I completely under-use it. So this will be helpful!

I have set up an account, tagged and bookmarked many great articles and sites, but for some reason the items I am bookmarking do not appear with the recent SEMLS bookmarks. I must be doing something wrong. I will have to keep playing with it. The site itself is a great tool for librarians. And, I too, like that you can access your bookmarks from anywhere.

Hi Debbie,

I figured it out. In delicious, you need to use one word for your tags. For the article to show up with the other learning 2.0 articles, you need to use the tag semls20 (all lowercase with no spaces.) If you change the tag, they should start appearing on the semls20 page.

Thanks Kathy,

It worked. I wasn't tagging it properly.

I cleaned up a lot of my delicious account today. I had things in there that picked up bookmarks from my move from Fall River to Dighton...including old bookmarks from my current computer. And I really liked all of the information on the iPhone. I think creating library apps would be really great - either to website, a certain blog we had, catalog. I am an iPhone user, and I love it. I am a little overwhelmed by the article about building your own app, but maybe some day...

Delicious would be a great tool for reference! The trick for me is convincing the technologically hesitant that such a tool might be better than leaving short cuts on the computer desktop.

I haven't discovered a personal use for Delicious, however. I tend not to save a lot on my computer.
